Antonio BERINI (Rome, 1770–Milan, 1861) - Lot 151
Antonio BERINI (Rome, 1770–Milan, 1861) Odysseus wearing his cap. Rare oval cameo on agate depicting a right-profile bust of the Greek hero Odysseus, bearded and wearing his cap, signed “BERINI” on the nape of the neck. Good condition, with a tiny chip. Early 19th century. Later mounted as an oval brooch in 14K gold (585 parts per thousand) chiseled and openworked with a frieze of volutes along the edge. Gross weight: 14.8 g. H. 3 x W. 2 cm (cameo) - H. 4.2 x W. 3.4 cm (brooch). History Born in Rome, Antonio Berini studied there under Giovanni Pichler between 1802 and 1804; he then worked in Milan under the patronage of Giovanni Battista Sommariva (c. 1760–1826), who commissioned numerous works from him. Few cameos and intaglios signed by him are known today, which explains the rarity of this example. Cameos depicting members of the imperial family can be found at the British Museum in London (Napoleon in uniform and bicorne hat on the left, inv. 1978,1002.998), at the Cabinet des Médailles of the Bibliothèque nationale de France (Napoleon with a laurel wreath on the left, inv. camée.937a), and at the Château de Malmaison (Eugène and his wife facing right, inv. MM.40.47.6118). A cameo depicting the actor François-Joseph Talma (1763– 1826) was recently sold at Thierry de Maigret, Drouot, with Maxime Charron as the appraiser, on March 5, 2021, lot 44 (sold for €5,152).
