BASTILLE. - LINGUET (Simon Nicolas-Henri).... - Lot 113 - Rossini
BASTILLE. - LINGUET (Simon Nicolas-Henri). Mémoires sur la Bastille et sur la détention de M. Linguet written by himself. London, Spilsbury, 1783. In-8, lemon morocco, triple gilt fillet, smooth red morocco-covered spine decorated with roulettes and a repeated urn iron, green title-piece, green tail-piece with supra-libris, interior roulette, gilt edges (Period binding). Edition decorated with an allegorical, almost premonitory frontispiece, engraved in intaglio by Woodman & Mutlow after Spilsbury, depicting the statue of Louis XVI enthroned on a pedestal facing the Bastille, which is collapsing under lightning. One of the essential works on the mythical Bastille prison, by a lawyer who was imprisoned from 1780 to 1782 and sent to the guillotine in 1794. An attractive copy in lemon morocco with red morocco spine, from the library of the fermier général Jacques Deschamps de Saint-Amand (1746-1826). Bookplate of Count Paul de Malden de la Bastille. The printed title, which is missing here, was replaced by a handwritten title at the time. Portrait of the author engraved after Greuze, added.
