PALMA GIOVANE - JACOPO PALMA DIT (Workshop of) - Lot 37
PALMA GIOVANE - JACOPO PALMA DIT (Workshop of) Venice circa 1548 - id.; 1628 The Martyrdom of Saint Catherine of Alexandria Oil on copper H. 39 - W. 32,2 cm Analogy: An identical composition, painted on copper, of similar dimensions (41.2 x 33.8 cm), considered to be from Palma le Jeune, appeared in the Sothebys' sale in London on 08 December 2005 (no. 306, reproduced p.129 of the catalogue). Document: A typed letter from the Italian historian Piero Morselli, undated (Villa I Tatti, The Harvard University Center For Italian Renaissance Studies, Florence) of two pages, will be given to the purchaser. The author states that it is "a work of high pictorial quality and a typical composition of Jacopo Palma the Younger". He considers it as a "raro modelletto" for a larger composition, which he situates around 1593, but that hasn't reached us.
