Important mid-18th-century Aubusson tapestry - Lot 373
Important mid-18th-century Aubusson tapestry Dimensions: 284 cm high x 203 cm wide Design based on a cartoon by Jean Baptiste Pillement Made of wool and silk Lined and braided tapestry. Note the touch of red, a mark of quality. Remarkably fresh colors, beautiful polychromy, and a lovely palette of blues, greens, yellows, reds, and browns typical of foliage, in the spirit of Aubusson chinoiserie from around 1760. In good condition, with a few slight areas of natural oxidation. Featuring a design of large exotic trees (palm trees) forming plant columns that frame very abundant and deliberately fantastical vegetation. Features exotic birds, notably a large wading bird in the foreground on the right. Asian and Oriental-style architecture in the background, rendered in perspective (pavilion, pagoda) near a body of water. Beautiful border decorated with rows of star-shaped flowers on an abrache background (shades of brown wool) Beautiful framing that creates a picture-frame effect Sources: Calouste Gulbenkian Museum (Lisbon).
