Luxurious hunting rifle, "Franco-Persian." - Lot 242
Luxurious hunting rifle, "Franco-Persian."
Flat-bottomed flintlock with a swan-neck hammer.
It is signed "Biche à Vezoul" in cursive letters and engraved with a four-legged animal.
Carved walnut stock decorated with a wild boar’s head.
Trigger guard featuring a crowned imperial eagle.
Oriental-style barrel, tapered at the muzzle and round toward the breech, made of Damascus steel.
It bears an inscription that appears to be in Farsi, suggesting it was likely manufactured in Persia.
Mechanics are in good condition.
Total length: 141 cm.
The “Who’s Who” of firearms in France lists a Bich father and son active in Vesoul from 1823 to 1835.
This piece likely stems from an earlier work by the same arquebusier.
Triggers featuring the imperial eagle are generally found on weapons given as gifts or belonging to those close to Emperor Napoleon I.
This particular piece is notable for its Eastern-style barrel, which points either to the campaign
of 1798—a war trophy elegantly refurbished in France—or to Franco-Persian relations from 1807 to 1809.
