HEAD OF A MILITARY SAINT, PROBABLY SAINT GEORGE Southern Germany or the Upper Rhine, c. 1500 (late 15th–early 16th century) Fragment of a carved and polychrome wooden sculpture depicting the head of a helmeted military saint, likely Saint George. The elongated face, with ascetic features, is framed by a short beard and topped with a helmet bearing stylized painted decoration. Traces of original polychromy remain. Mounted on a circular wooden base added later. H: 23.5 cm; Total H: 26 cm (Signs of wear, losses, significant damage, and woodworm infestation; fragmentary polychromy; modern base.) Provenance: private collection in eastern France Note: This work can be compared to late Gothic sculptures from Swabia or the Rhineland dating from around 1500.
