L'Oiseau de Feu Firebird premiered June 25, 1910 at the Paris Opéra by Serge de Diaghilev's Ballets Russes. This famous ballet by Michel Fokine, scored by Igor Stravisnky, with sets and costumes by Léon Bakst, assisted by Alexandre Golovine, was first performed in London in 1912. It was revived in 1926 in costumes designed by Natalia Goncharova, the probable date of this costume, whose textile analysis belongs to the interwar period. The last photo is that of a sketch not supplied and for documentary purposes. Natalia Goncharova (1881-1962), a leading figure on the Moscow art scene before the First World War, was invited by Serge Diaghilev to design the sets and costumes for the Ballets Russes production of Le Coq d'or. In 1914, this opera-ballet premiered in Paris and London. Goncharova's innovative approach to Russian folk art, her knowledge of contemporary French painting and, above all, her sense of humor enabled the artist to become a mediator between the Russian avant-garde and the West.Expert: Serge LIAGRE
