"Mikhail Larionov - Natalia Goncharova for Serge de Diaghile - Lot 32
"Mikhail Larionov - Natalia Goncharova for Serge de Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, a complete Russian-style women's costume with Serafane and Kokoshnik . Freely inspired by Russian folklore in vogue from 1909, the labels are not legible. Machine-applied cotton sateen in shades of blue, pink, cream, yellow and gray. Thick blue cotton lining. Missing mostly at shoulder straps and very slightly worn at sleeves. The overall structure is solid, and the colors unaltered. Circa 1920-1940. Stable condition. This piece is not listed in any museum, and there are many clues as to the name of a production that refers to Russian folklore, most probably reinterpreted by the painter Henri Matisse. 1914 Le Coq d'Or ( Rimsky Korsakov/ Goncharova). 1915 Soleil de Nuit ( Massine/ Rimsky Korsakov/Larionov). 1921 The Jester (Chout) ( Prokofiev/ Larionov) or Sadko by Goncharova. Natalia Goncharova (1881-1962), a leading figure on the Moscow art scene before the First World War, was invited by Serge Diaghilev to design the sets and costumes for the Ballets Russes production of Le Coq d'or. In 1914, this opera-ballet premiered in Paris and London. Goncharova's innovative approach to Russian folk art, her knowledge of contemporary French painting and, above all, her sense of humor enabled the artist to become a mediator between the Russian avant-garde and the West. Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's opera, inspired by Pushkin's tale and political satire The Golden Cockerel, inspired a colorful set that made Goncharova a leading painter and set designer. Her success paved the way for further collaborations between the Ballets Russes and painters such as Mikhail Larionov, Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse. "Expert: Serge LIAGRE
