BESNARD Albert, 1849–1934 A Cup of Tea, 1889 oil on canvas (restored), signed, titled, and dated upper right: a cup of tea/London/Besnard 1889, lower left: trace of an inscription scraped off and covered, labels on the back of the stretcher: "Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, inventory no. 2837", "Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes Inventario 1937 No. 6830", a label with a photograph of the work located in Buenos Aires and dated 12/29/1999, a "Donacion A. Uriarte y Pineiro on the back of the stretcher and the canvas, a red stamp with the number 2837, the mark of a paint dealer: From Wood and Co 190 Brompton Road London S.W. 81x61cm PROVENANCE: Arturo Uriarte Pineiro Collection - National Museum of Fine Arts, Buenos Aires (donated in 1941) - Returned to the descendants of the Uriarte y Pineiro family in 1991 - Chiswick Auctions sale, October 29, 2019, lot 205. HISTORY: Comparable to an etching of a similar subject dated 1883, a proof of which is held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
