LAUGÉ Achille, 1861–1944 - Lot 87
LAUGÉ Achille, 1861–1944 Portrait of Émilie Dormières, wife of Millet, 1897 oil on canvas (slight trace of a signature), signed and dated upper right 36x45cm BIBLIOGRAPHY: Nicole Tamburini, Achille Laugé, the Point, the Line, the Light, exhibition catalog at the Carcassonne Museum of Fine Arts / Petiet Museum in Limoux / Chartreuse Museum in Douai, 2009–2010, Silvana Editoriale, Milan, 2009, painting described and reproduced under no. 21. EXHIBITION: Saint-Tropez – Carcassonne, 1990, no. 10. Trained in Toulouse alongside Henri Martin and Antoine Bourdelle, Achille Laugé moved to Paris and discovered the Post-Impressionist masters, including Signac and Seurat. He was influenced by them and adopted Divisionism. His interpretation of Pointillism is highly sensitive. By fragmenting his brushstrokes into fine lines of varying sizes and thicknesses, he shapes forms and distributes light. Our portrait is a fine example of his use of refined harmonies within a limited palette. A fine blue border outlines and isolates the beautiful profile, while light seems to emanate from the face. The artist succeeds in expressing the quiet intimacy of his subject. Beyond the brilliance of its execution, our painting boasts impeccable provenance, as it comes directly from the model’s family and has therefore never been offered for sale before. Achille Laugé’s works created before 1900 are as rare as they are desirable.
