French school, 19th century Portrait of Lieutenant Claude Étienne Debrand (1771-1856), veteran of the Saint-Domingue expedition of 1801-1803 Oil on canvas Size: 104.5 x 84 cm Inscribed lower right and left: "I was born in Chamblay on the fourth of August 1771. I volunteered for the 1789 Revolution. I did all the campaigns and was wounded three times. In year nine, peace came and the army returned to France. At the end of the year, an army was formed to fight the negroes on the island of St Domingue, who were in revolution and commanded by Toussaint-Louverture. I was seriously wounded and had to leave the service. This portrait was painted in 1851 at the age of 80.
