This fine oil on panel is typical of the work of Gillis Gillisz de Bergh.
The artist was a Dutch Golden Age painter who spent his entire career in Delft, where he was admitted to the St. Luke's Guild in 1624. Like other painters of his time, he also worked as an expert, appraising works of art for estates and lotteries. A still-life specialist, he first made a name for himself in kitchen scenes under the influence of his probable master Cornelis Jacobsz. Delff, before evolving towards a more elegant and refined style in the 1630s. Later influenced by masters such as Balthasar van der Ast, he is today best known for paintings such as this one.
