JAPAN - MEIJI PERIOD (1868–1912) Small portable iron cabinet inlaid with gold, featuring a design of Chion-in Temple (in Kyoto) on the front, the sides adorned with scenes of Miyajima (Itsukushima Island) and Shimizu Harbor, and the back featuring a pair of cranes among bamboo. The interior of the door is adorned with three multi-lobed panels featuring birds against a background of “manji” (swastika) characters; it opens to reveal four drawers decorated with medallions and kiku (chrysanthemums) against a background of “manji” (svastika). The door handle is butterfly-shaped, and the handles of the four drawers are chrysanthemum-shaped. On the reverse side is the mark “Kyoto Komai saku” and the Raku seal.
