Embroidered silk fan leaf, Algeria, located in Algiers 19th - Lot 77
Embroidered silk fan leaf, Algeria, located in Algiers 19th century Grey silk fan leaf decorated with polychrome silk thread embroidery of a long sinuous floral stem and religious inscriptions in Arabic thuluth. The text reads: "Thought". "God. "Angels protect you". "The greatest wisdom is the fear of God". This is followed by the name of Algiers ("al-Jaza'ir) and the letter "ba", a possible initial for the artist. Presented unfolded without its frame under framed glass. Max. height: 38 cm : W.: 76.5 cm Some stains and foxing, adhesive on back. A similar example (Galerie Le Curieux, Saint Ouen sur Seine) with its mother-of-pearl frame and original box titled Duvelleroy, London, suggests that this silk leaf embroidered in Algiers was fan-mounted in London by the same fan-maker, circa 1890.
