Portrait of Raja Jagat Singh, Mughal India, early 19th centu - Lot 73
Portrait of Raja Jagat Singh, Mughal India, early 19th century Gouache and gold on paper depicting the raja standing, facing right, in a green lawn landscape. He is dressed in a white jama over orange pants, with a golden sash tied around his waist. He wears the visnuite tilak on his forehead, is topped with an orange turban with aigrette and is richly adorned. A katar is tucked into his belt and his hands rest on a talwar. Above his head, a name inscribed in Persian nasta'liq identifies him as raja Jagat Singh. Mounted as an album page on brown card stock with a wide orange border and fine turquoise and white borders. Gilded wooden frame. Painting size: 16.1 x 9 cm; page size: 27 x 21.6 cm Small stains, overpainting and accidents to the paper, wetness in the margins. Although several rulers bore the name Jagat Singh, the subject of this painting appears to be Jagat Singh I (1607 - 1652), Maharana of Udaïpur in Rajasthan between 1628 and 1652.
