Ali, Hassan and Hussein before the Prophet Muhammad, Central India, Deccan, late 18th - early 19th century Gouache and gold on paper depicting the Prophet kneeling on a throne, dressed in white, his head crowned with a golden hat and his face nimbed. He receives in audience 'Ali kneeling, arms crossed on his knees, his zulfiqar sword in his left hand. He is accompanied by his two sons, Hassan and Hussein, standing behind him in the same posture. The three men stand on the terrace of a palace, with flowerbeds and a wooded landscape in the background. In the glowing sky on the horizon, two cherubs emerge from the clouds, one dripping golden rain, the other holding a golden instrument. Mounted as an album page on midnight-blue cardstock with gold-painted floral margins on a red and ecru background. Wooden frame. Painting size: 20.8 x 13 cm; page size: 29.5 x 21.5 cm Some tears, wear, paper curling, overpainting, a few stains. This subject is known from an 18th-century Indian painting complementing an earlier Safavid Persian manuscript (British Library, London, Or. 11837, f.25v).
