Playing card die in lead and pewter featuring a king, probab - Lot 180
Playing card die in lead and pewter featuring a king, probably the King of Clubs. Dressed in an ermine-trimmed coat, he wears a crown on his head and holds a scepter and a cruciger orb.
Switzerland, late 18th century
Height: 12 cm - Width: 7 cm
(missing upper left corner, deposits)
This plate was probably used to make an engraved wood matrix for the xylogravure printing of playing cards. A similar king of clubs is preserved at the Bibliothèque nationale de France (notice FRBNF40917759). No similar plates appear to be held in public collections.
