GÉRÔME Jean-Léon, 1824-1904, Draped Woman Symbolizing Belgium, c.1852-1855, Sanguine on paper (stains), annotated: "Belgique" upper right, Jean-Léon Gérôme stamp of the Aimé Morot estate lower left verso (L.3230), verso bears the stamp of the Paul and Florence Vercier collection (L.3607), no. 1266, 35.5x22.5 cm. HISTORY: This study relates either to the frieze project intended for reproduction on a commemorative vase at the 1852 World's Fair in London, or to the frieze project intended for the model of a lighthouse at the 1855 World's Fair in Paris. The Vercier archives mention an exchange with Mr. Gérald Ackermann in 1989, which enabled them to identify the subject.
