French school, 18th century The Arethusa Fountain in the Gardens of the Villa d'Este Black stone, leaf glued to its mount, missing lower center and right 317 x 417 mm. Inscription on mount C. Natoire 1757 Provenance: Petit-Laurent, Le Havre Petit-Laurent, Le Havre, acquired February 25, 1967 ; Paul and Florence Vercier Collection (L. 3607), no. 204. Bibliography : Le dessin [XVIe - XXe siècle] à travers une collection havraise, 1987, n°110. Formerly attributed to NATOIRE, Charles-Joseph (1700-1777). The subject was treated by Fragonard from another angle, cf. A. Ananoff, L'œuvre dessiné de Fragonard, vol. III, fig. 415 and 416.
