Terracotta dog-gargoyle depicting a dog protome. Roman period, 1st century A.D. Height: 21 cm - Length: 17.7 cm (one ear to be glued back on) This type of gargoyle adorned the compluvium of a Roman house, which was designed to collect rainwater to feed a basin or cistern. Several have been found at Pompeii, and examples have been found in the south of France. A comparable dog-gargoyle is preserved in the Art Museum of Princeton University, inv. 1989-51.
