HISTORICAL: Jules Claretie sale, Hôtel Drouot, May 8, 1914, no. 96.
The painting L'Alsace, elle attend is one of Henner's most famous compositions. Painted in 1871 after the French defeat, it was widely distributed by engraving and enjoyed great success. Our drawing is probably a replica rather than a study, perhaps for an illustration based on Henner's patriotic composition, for an article conceived by Jules Claretie at the time.
