Jean-François FAVRE (Geneva, 1751-1807), enamel painter, and - Lot 252
Jean-François FAVRE (Geneva, 1751-1807), enamel painter, and Jean-Jacques CAFFIERI (1725-1792), bronzier to the King. Oval miniature portrait on ivory of a gentleman, three-quarter right, in red suit and black tie. In a large rocaille-style gilt bronze frame, decorated with garlands of roses, surmounted by a ribboned bow, at the top a cartel inscribed "I.I. Caffieri / Sculpteur du Roy". On the reverse, a gilt bronze nailed cartel stating "Peint par J. F. Favre / Genevois en 1778". 18th century, circa 1778. H. 4 x W. 3.5 cm (miniature). H. 11.5 x W. 8 cm (frame). With its CIC n°FR2506900311-K (2025) History: A pupil of Geneva painters Jacques Saint-Ours and Marc-Théodore Bourrit, Favre continued his training in Paris at Charles-Louis Loehr's studio. Best known for his enamel work, he also worked on ivory and paper. On his return to Switzerland, he produced pieces for the Swiss watchmaking industry. Some of his works are held in important museum collections, including two miniatures in the Louvre from the former David-Weill collection (inv. RF 30888 and RF 30887). Jean-Jacques Caffieri (1725-1792) was born into a family of sculptors and bronze-makers of Italian origin, established in Paris since the beginning of the reign of Louis XIV. Son of Philippe Caffieri (1678-1755), himself a sculptor and bronzemaker to the King, who had the privilege of gilding his works in his own workshop, Jean-Jacques was renowned primarily for his sculptural work, including numerous portraits of illustrious men. However, like his brother Philippe (1714-1774), Jean-Jacques continued his father's work as a bronzemaker, as evidenced by a pair of arm-lights attributed to him and preserved at the Château de Versailles (inv. V 5732.1 and V 5732.2). Literature: N. Lemoine-Bouchard, Les Peintres en miniature, 1650-1850, Les Éditions de l'Amateur, 2008, p. 231. Expert: Maxime Charron
