DAVID Gérard (Suite de) Ouwater 1450 / Bruges 1523 - Lot 240
DAVID Gérard (Suite de) Ouwater 1450 / Bruges 1523
The Virgin with milk soup
Oil on canvas mounted on oak panel; mounted on canvas.
(Restorations; old oxidized varnish)
H. 37 - L. 28.5 cm
Frame in molded wood and stucco, gilded and rechampi red (small missing parts).
Related to the composition by Gérard David in the Musée Royal des Beaux - Arts de Bruxelles (Wood; 35 x 29 cm; circa 1510 - 1515), known from various replicas (Genoa, Palazzo Bianco) and early copies, including the now-destroyed one painted on canvas in the Musée des Beaux - Arts de Strasbourg (Cf. Hans J Miegroaet, Gerard David, Fig. 232 & 232, pp. 242 & 243; catalog no. 33, pp.301 & 302 - Antwerp 1989).
As in the example from the Von Pannwitz collection, from the convent of Toledo, the infant Jesus here is not holding a small wooden spoon in his right hand, but a small branch of seven cherries, symbolizing the seven joys of the Virgin (Cf. idem, no. 33a).
