Early 18th century Piedmontese school - Lot 233
Early 18th century Piedmontese school Saint Barbara of Heliopolis, martyr, patron saint of firefighters and artillerymen Oil on canvas 105 x 79.5 cm Below, coat of arms, motto, numeral and date: 1715 Our beautiful painting recalls the devotion of fire professionals to Saint Barbara of Heliopolis, a 4th-century martyr celebrated on December 4, whom the Church declares to be part of the "college of fourteen auxiliary saints". On the lower left are the coats of arms of the sponsors: the Paoli family, from Turin, also co-lords of Toetto di Scarena (now called "Touët-de-l'Escarène", as the village became French in 1860). Their motto "Non sine sudore et sanguine" sums up the shield, and a G.P. numeral will enable us to find out which member of this family, probably an artilleryman, commissioned our painting.
