Rome, attributed to Antonio Tempesta (Florence, 1555 - Rome, 1650), first third of the 17th century "Jesus saving St. Peter from the waters Oil on lapis lazuli with gold flakes 8.1 cm x 6.2 cm (small chips and cracks) Tempesta's mastery of stone painting is clearly evident here, with the animated posture of the figures, the vivid colors of the costumes and their delicate pleating, and the judicious use of precious stones, with the sky and waves punctuated with gold and Christ's head as if shrouded in a white cloud. Set in an architectural frame of ebony veneer and hard stones (lapis lazuli, Sicilian jasper), gilded bronze, rock crystal, coral and silver. Rome, first third of the 17th century Height: 28.2 cm - Width: 14.7 cm (a few accidents and missing pieces) Mounted in a molded ebony frame on a velvet background.
