Icon of Saint Vsévolod of Pskov. - Lot 212
Icon of Saint Vsévolod of Pskov. Tempera on wood, in its silver oklad 84 zolotniks (875 thousandths). Wear and small chips. Moscow, 1908-1917. Goldsmith : Nikolai Grachev. 27.5 x 23 cm. History Saint Vsévolod (?-1138), also known as Vsévolod of Pskov or Prince Vsévolod-Gabriel, is a saint of the Russian Orthodox Church, often depicted with a sword because of his dual nature as a prince, as a member of the Riourikid dynasty, and as a defender of the faith. Vsévolod died a martyr around 1138, probably for refusing to abandon Christianity. His death earned him recognition as a martyr for Christ.
