Charles-François DUMOURIEZ (1739-1823) general, he won the b - Lot 257
Charles-François DUMOURIEZ (1739-1823) general, he won the battles of Valmy and Jemmapes and conquered Belgium; defeated at Neerwinden, he passed to the enemy. L.S. as Minister of Foreign Affairs, Paris April 15, 1792; 1 1/2 pages in-fol. On Switzerland. He had given imperative orders "to the Ambassador in Switzerland to stop the recruitments that had been announced to be publicly made in this country for the army of the Emigrants". According to the Ambassador, nothing seems to justify this unfortunate rumor: "it even appears that the Canton of Berne has made the most severe deffenses in this regard, and that these deffenses have been executed". He was assured that "the enlistments that are being made are really on behalf of Holland". The Ambassador promised to keep a watchful eye on the matter "so that no uncertainty remains as to the true destination of these soldiers who are being enlisted, either for Holland or for other powers"...
