Charles JEANNE (1800-1837) revolutionary, leader of the Sain - Lot 242
Charles JEANNE (1800-1837) revolutionary, leader of the Saint-Merry cloister barricade during the June 1832 insurrection. L.S., co-signed by 6 fellow prisoners, Clairvaux December 7, 1834, to the editor of La Tribune; 2 1/2 pages in-fol. Very rare prison letter. Jeanne and her fellow prisoners protest their republican sentiments, which protect them from discouragement and the idea of suicide, despite the "physical & moral torture" they are subjected to by their jailers. They ask for the letters they have sent to be inserted, so that republicans can be informed of their attitude... " We dread the cruelties of our jailer! But we defy him! [...] If we sleep on the slabs of our dungeons, if we resign ourselves to drinking only water & eating only the disgusting & insufficient food of the prison, if one of us deprives himself of visits from his old parents whom he could only see through a grate, if we refuse the doctor's visit when we are ill, [...] it's because we don't want to submit to formalities unworthy of men of heart"... We enclose a P.A.S., co-signed by 4 fellow inmates, protesting the price of the paper supplied to them; and an lll.s.from his mother (Clairvaus January 12, 1835). 9785/1020
