Ange PITOU (1767-1842) chansonnier and writer, author of ant - Lot 238
Ange PITOU (1767-1842) chansonnier and writer, author of anti-revolutionary songs, fifteen times arrested then deported to Cayenne on 18 fructidor; hero of Alexandre Dumas's novel, and of Lecocq's operetta La Fille de Mme Angot.L.A.S., Paris May 16, 1816, to M. de LESCARENE at the Ministry of the Interior; 4 pages in-fol. Rare and lengthy letter on her book in favor of the monarchy. "En traçant les malheurs des Stuarts et des Bourbons, je me suis proposé de retramper les francoisà la monarchie. The Convention had used every means at its disposal to distort morality and religion in order to suppress in the hearts of the French people the principles that had identified us for centuries with a legitimate and rational monarchy. Buonaparte arrives in the midst of ruins and founds a government and a monarchy for his soldiers, for his glory and for his family; he chains fortune, glory and our youth to his chariot. He corrupts our ancient institutions; he amalgamates them; he flatters, punishes and deceives all men [...] The habit of his successes was about to naturalize us to his iniquities when the sky, having broken with blindness and misfortune, suddenly gave us back our kings and our legitimate institutions"... Pitou explains how he wanted to "destroy the charm and bring youth and the new generation back to the primitive existence of peace and monarchy", outlines the plan he followed, talks about the death of Louis XVI, Marie-Antoinette, Madame Élisabeth, Louis XVII, etc. Former André Saudemont collection (March 15-16, 1983, no. 500). 9785/1003
