René-Louis Levassor, comte de LATOUCHE-TRÉVILLE (1745-1804) vice-admiral, commanded the Toulon squadron. L.A.S, at Maison Bailly near Cap 3 pluviôse XI (January 23, 1803), to an English admiral [Duckworth ?]; 1 page in-fol. Pacification of Saint-Domingue. Commander-in-chief of France's naval forces in Saint-Domingue, he thanks the admiral for sending the frigate Le Hern to pick up his mail bound for the authorities in Jamaica. He continues to pacify Saint-Domingue: "we seized the port of peace [Port-de-Paix] after fairly strong resistance from the rebels, with the sustained fire of a ship and a frigate, the two forts were soon reduced, the navy had the greatest share in this success"... Attached is a P.A.S, to Cap Français 28 floréal X (May 18, 1802; 1 p. in-fol., vignette marine, on his letterhead Le Contre-amiral Latouche-Tréville, commandant les forces navales à Saint-Domingue). Authorization granted to Captain Cooper commanding the ship La Danaé, "to proceed to Havana with his vessel"...
