Louis de FONTANES (1757-1821) writer, Grand Master of the University, friend of Chateaubriand. Autograph MANUSCRIT, [September 23, 1800]; 12 pages in-4, erasures and corrections. Speech for the transfer of TURENNE's ashes to Les Invalides, September 23, 1800: "The French Revolution, in giving the greatest spectacles to the human race, seemed to disprove all ancient traditions, and to change, as it were, the experience of peoples and ages. [...] For the first time, we have seen a great political body change nature and form without its parts having divided. This empire, overthrown on its old foundations, has re-established itself with greater glory on new foundations [...] I like to retrace the great destinies of the nascent Republic before the manes of this hero who belonged to the most brilliant days of monarchy [...] Yes: warriors, citizens, French people who have listened to me, Turenne is the son of your glory, he contemplates you and applauds you"... Attached is a L.A.S., Paris 2 pluviose VII (January 21, 1799), to the Citoyens administrateurs; 2 p. in-4. About his collaboration on the journal Le Mémorial and "the distance I have always lived from political intrigues"... ex 9785/954
