François-Louis-Esprit DUBOIS (1758-1804) magistrate; convent - Lot 195
François-Louis-Esprit DUBOIS (1758-1804) magistrate; conventionnel (Haut-Rhin). L.A.S., Aix-La-Chapelle 4 prairial [May 23, 1795], to his colleague and friend Michel-Louis Talot in Andernach; 2 1/2 pages in-4, addressed with ink and red wax seal. He responds to Talot's criticism: "For a small fault [...] you treat me harshly, my friend; but you are right. I was wrong to grant permission to Morlot's wife [...] as for an alleged decree that must have hindered the works in Coblentz, I have no sort of knowledge of it, and I dare say none exists from me. All I remember is that the fines imposed on communities that had not provided their quota of men having accumulated, I told Marceau that I thought he could grant a little moderation"... He replied to War Commissioner Nogarède in Nijmegen, "so that he would have to continue the cuts necessary for the mission of the army's bread. The spirit of the Treaty with Prussia is [...] that the countries of Cleves, Gueldres and Meurs remain subject as before the peace to the necessary requisitions"... 9785/555
