LYON. Two interesting letters, August-December 1794. L.A. (unsigned), [Lyon] 10 fructidor II (August 27, 1794), to citizen Robineau in Aix; 2 pages in-4, address with franked city postmark. ... "Il a paru ces jours ci une proclamation des Representants, envoyés pour faire le Bonheur du peuple et faire enfin sortir de l'oppression une ville qui y gemit depuis si longtemps. They go into many details that have given the greatest pleasure to all the good citizens. They say that joy is returning to everyone's faces, and that they hope tranquility will continue. [...] A host of foreigners and locals have arrived, who would not otherwise have dared to approach this unfortunate city. [...] everyone blesses the Convention and the Representatives it has sent"... On the upheavals and popular movements in Lyon, some caused by "mathevons [...] a name used to designate squanderers, denunciators, in general men of blood and theft"; arrest of three officers of the Bataillon de la Côte d'Or who heard Vive le Roi shouted without protest. News of the lifting of the maximum raised grain prices considerably... "Lyon is divided into two parties: on the one hand, the Sectionnaires and denonciateurs [...] and on the other, all those who have been persecuted. I see it as two armies in presence, just waiting for a favorable moment. In the midst of it all are the agitators who inflame one another.
