Priests. L.S. by 18 citizens "detained as Priests", Nantua 2 - Lot 158
Priests. L.S. by 18 citizens "detained as Priests", Nantua 23 floréal II (May 12, 1794), to Jean-Nicolas MÉAULLE, représentant du Peuple "près le Département de l'Ain"; 2 pages in-fol. Petition from imprisoned priests, to Méaulle on mission in the Ain [where he freed over 200 people]. "For more than three months, as a result of a decree by Albitte, and for measures of general safety, we have been groaning in a detention that is as ruinous as it is withering for our patriotism. This measure, though legal, is not uniform throughout the Republic. [...] We, whose conduct has not been tainted by any offence; we, always peaceful and submissive to the law; we, already purged by Gouly in a detention which preceded by only a few days that which we are experiencing today [...]; he hastened to do us justice, by bringing back a decree undoubtedly surprised by slander, and allowed us to enjoy our freedom. There you have it, Citizen Representative, a succinct and naive account of the facts and our position. You are right; pronounce, hasten to shorten the term of a detention already too long for innocence. In any case, whatever your judgment, you will find us submissive and jealous to be useful to the Republic"... Signed: Bertrand the elder and younger, Carrier, J.F. Delacour, P.F. Matthieu,J.B. Revoux, etc...
