Joseph-Marie Tennet de LAUBADÉRE (1745-1809) Revolutionary g - Lot 146
Joseph-Marie Tennet de LAUBADÉRE (1745-1809) Revolutionary general, distinguished himself at the siege of Landau. L.S. as "Général de Division Commandant en chef à Landau", Strasbourg 3 pluviôse II (January 22, 1794), to a "cher Camarade"; 3 pages in-fol. Long, interesting letter recounting the siege of Landau... "I did my best to defend the position I had to support; any good Republican would have done in my place what I did". He explains his conflicts with the ConventionnelDENTZEL , who was also locked up in Landau: "Dentzel seized powers he didn't have, showing himself to be despotic; he arbitrarily suspended general Delmas, "a brave man without breeches, a good fellow who fights vigorously", and took measures that were dangerous for the safety and defense of the town. Laubadère recounts the violent bombardments he had to endure, the depletion of food supplies, the riots caused by the supporters of capitulation, whom he always repulsed with horror... "I had our horses killed, which replaced fresh meat for 3 weeks, and I responded to the enemy's summonses with letters that breathed the purest republicanism and the deepest contempt for Kings. It is after having endured so many hardships, that I was rescued by our valiant brothers of the Armees du Rhin et de la Mozelle"... 9785/744
