Hubert-Pascal AMEILHON (1730-1811) scholar and librarian, du - Lot 108
Hubert-Pascal AMEILHON (1730-1811) scholar and librarian, during the Revolution he brought together religious and private libraries, and organized the Bibliothèque de l'Arsenal. L.A.S, Paris December 3, 1792, to the Directory of the Department of Paris; 1 page in-4. Commissaire aux Bibliothèques nationales, he has received a copy of the Minister's orders concerning "the sorting of nobiliaries, armorials and other books of this kind in the Bibliothèques nationales entrusted to my care or supervision. From today, we will begin this operation, and when I have collected a certain quantity of these proscribed works, I will let you know". He will carry out the minister's wishes with the greatest zeal: "I will be more severe than lenient, except afterwards to return, if necessary, to a few works which, despite the stain of their title, nevertheless appear to be exempt from the general condemnation, for there are many which are so full of charters and ancient documents that one would search in vain elsewhere, that it is not possible to destroy them without doing irreparable harm to history"... Enclosed is a printed Decree of the National Convention of October 10, 1792, "Portant qu'il sera sursis à la vente des Bibliothèques & autres objets scientifiques, trouvés dans les maisons des Émigrés"... ex 9785/606
