Léger-Félicité SONTHONAX (1763-1813) civil governor in Saint-Domingue, where he abolished slavery. P.S. as Commissaire national civil, Saint-Domingue November 11, 1792; 1 1/2 in-fol. pages, ink stamps Assemblée générale de la partie française de St Domingue and Commission nationale civile déléguée à St Domingue (small tear, ink a little faded). Copy of a request addressed to the Intermediate Commission of the French part of St. Domingue, by Thomas, inspector then exempt in the Cape police: having decided to send his family to France to "save them from the misfortunes afflicting the colony", himself "ruined [...], his properties having been burned", he would like a place as captain... The request, supported by the mayor and municipal officers of the city and suburbs of Cape Town, is certified by Sonthonax.
