Philippe DUMONT (1765-1833) Conventionnel (Calvados). L.A.S, - Lot 104
Philippe DUMONT (1765-1833) Conventionnel (Calvados). L.A.S, Paris October 21, 1792, to the administrators of Calvados; 2 pages. in-fol. Very interesting letter on the dissensions between the departments and Paris. The Convention has received an address from the department of Calvados "concerning the guarding of the 83 departemens with which the National Convention must surround itself [...] a question which at this moment divides the assembly and agitates the people of Paris". Buzot, Gensonné and Barbaroux decided to read it: "The applause long covered the murmurs". Dupont then describes the disarray it caused in the Convention, some deputies wanting to debate the issue, others wanting to stick to the agenda - a solution that was adopted. But the address was to be printed and sent to all 83 departments. "You will have imitators, and Parisians will finally learn that they are only part of a whole, a portion of the Republic. They will learn that the citizens of the départemens watch over them, and that they have not applauded the Shiite tyrant to crawl under the municipal despotism of Paris"...Former Patrice Hennessy collection. ex 9785/594
