Joseph-Antoine-Joachim CERUTTI (1738-1792) Jesuit, literary scholar and journalist, friend and collaborator of Mirabeau, deputy for Paris at the Legislative Assembly. 2 L.A.S., Paris January 10 and March 13, 1791, to the President of the Electoral Assembly of the Paris district; 4 and 2 pages in-4 (engraved portrait enclosed). January 10, long letter of thanks after his appointment as administrator of the Paris department: "Among the great objects of supervision which will occupy the eyes of the Administrators, Public Education will be counted one of the first. After creating a Constitution for the People, we must create a People for the Constitution". He indicates that he has drawn up "a voluminous work which embraces and traverses the immensity of Education", and his plans, guided by Philosophy, adhere precisely "to our new Legislation. [...] Franklin in America, Rousseau, Mably in Europe, have been the teachers, have been the artisans of our Independence"... Etc. March 13, on the election of the Constitutional Bishop of Paris, who should be like a Primate: "The Constitutional Religion requires in Paris for Bishop, not only a pastor who honors it, but a man of head who defends it; a wise man who renews the education of seminarians; who combines studies with the laws; who brings light and calm in the stormiest of Dioceses; who will serve as an example and bulwark for the entire Gallican Church"...
