Jean-Jacques DUVAL d'ÉPRÉMESNIL (1745-guillotiné 1794) was a - Lot 64
Jean-Jacques DUVAL d'ÉPRÉMESNIL (1745-guillotiné 1794) was a councillor at the Parlement de Paris, one of the leaders of the parliamentary opposition; deputy of the nobility (Paris hors les murs) to the Estates General and the Constituent Assembly, he violently opposed the Revolution; he courageously refused to flee and emigrate, and was guillotined. L.A.S., Paris July 18, 1778; 3 pages in-4. Interesting political letter. "Vous vivés a la campagne, vous est l'homme heureux dont parle Horace, qui cultiver en paix le champ de ses peres, loin du bruit des villes, et du tumulte des affaires: et si la liberté regnoit dans nos campagnes comme la paix, vous y jouiriés de toute la félicité qu'un homme sage peut esperer sur la terre. The felicity of a Councillor in Parliament is not the same. These are difficult times. It was thought that the recall of the magistracy would re-establish in France the empire of the laws, the golden age. Laws and finances are still at war. The harshest taxes are being increased, the most sacred principles are being attacked [...] there is a way to reconcile the King's wealth and the nation's liberty". He foresees a difficult struggle to guarantee citizens "from the invasions of arbitrary power"... 9785/395
