Copy in the hand of the prince, father of the Duc d'Enghien, of the letter addressed from Edinburgh on December 12, 1797 by the Comte d'ARTOIS (future Charles X) to "Messieurs de Puisaye, de Frotté, de Chatillon, de Bourmont, de Suzannet et d'Alligre", replying to their letter of the 5th, in which the Vendée chiefs summoned him to descend into France and place himself at the head of the Catholic and royal armies of the West: "I will not at this time authorize an insurrection in the western provinces; I will not provoke it by my presence, and I will not make myself responsible to posterity for the blood I will cause to be shed in vain. The right time to take up arms is not when these provinces are compressed by a new overload of Republican troops: it is not for vain glory that we must fight, but for useful glory. The more precious the blood of brave and loyal royalists, the more my honor requires me to spare it in such obviously unfavorable circumstances. The true French will never despair of the restoration of the comma monarchy, and the king my brother will always find them ready to devote themselves when he gives the order"...
