[Joseph LEBON (1765-1795)]. Manuscript; 315 ff.in-8 in linen - Lot 46
[Joseph LEBON (1765-1795)]. Manuscript; 315 ff.in-8 in linen folder. Very interesting file compiled by Émile Lebon, Joseph's only son, a magistrate who died in Dijon on May 27, 1871, containing a wealth of notes on Joseph Lebon and his mission in Pas-de-Calais.On his death, the file was probably collected by historian Alfred Bégis (1829-1904, as evidenced by a leaflet on his letterhead), then by Montreuil-sur-Mer historian Count Georges de Lhomel (1855-1924) (at the head of the file is a letter from the President of the Dijon Chamber of Notaries to G. de Lhomel, 1914). One of Émile Lebon's preoccupations had been the rehabilitation of his father's memory; in addition to two collections of correspondence, he had published a refutation of the indictment of the Convention (1855) and a biography of Joseph Lebon in his private life and political career (1861), for which these notes must have served as documentation. These notes recopy or analyze letters and documents from August 26, 1793 to 11 Thermidor II (July 29, 1794), shortly after the fall of Robespierre; they also include a copy of a letter from Roger-Ducos on the choice of Lebon's defender, and reflect the research carried out in the Pas-de-Calais archives on this partly enigmatic figure. Oratorian, constitutional priest of Neuville, then mayor of Arras in 1792, administrator of Pas-de-Calais, deputy to the Convention, finally sent on a mission to his department, where he eventually became known for his revolutionary zeal. Denounced to the Convention, he was guillotined.
