[AMERICANA - CIVIL WAR]. LINCOLN, Abraham (1809-1865). Signed piece. Washington, June 8, 1863, "in the eighty seventh year of the Independence of the United States". Approximately 48 x 35.5 cm. Framed. Engraved document on parchment with handwritten additions. Autograph signature of Abraham LINCOLN, as President of the United States of America, and countersignature of Edwin M. STANTON (1814-1869), as Secretary of War. Green paper stamp. Registration in upper left corner in red ink. EXCEPTIONAL HISTORICAL DOCUMENT. Military appointment for Civil War hero Charles R. Coster (c. 1837-1888), to the rank of "Captain in the Twelfth regiment of infantry in the service of the United States: to rank as such from the thirtieth day of August eighteen hundred and sixty two [...]". A private in the 12th Infantry Regiment in 1861, Coster later took part in the Battle of Chancellorsville. In May 1863, Coster's regiment joined Colonel Buschbeck's brigade, where he replaced him in June. He thus became captain. In this capacity, he took part in the three-day Battle of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, from July 1 to 3, 1863, where he protected the retreat of Union troops. Almost 600 soldiers from this unit died on this occasion. Coster's courage and bravery were rewarded. The Battle of Gettysburg was the heaviest of the Civil War in terms of casualties, and ended in defeat for the Confederates and victory for the Unionists. Expert: Mathilde Lalin-Leprevost
