Very interesting correspondence to his chief of staff. [Ernest Théroulde (1837-1889), secretary and chief of staff to the Grand Chamberlain, and diplomat, married Julia Maria Cuadra, a native of Guatemala, on September 30, 1873]. 1868. From Antibes (March 8), he welcomes Théroulde's trip to Germany and Russia, and speaks of the loss of his wife; visit of General Reille and the Duke of Elchingen sent by the Emperor for the funeral of the King of Bavaria. He awaits (March 23) the arrival of Théroulde in Antibes; he hopes his son will be appointed to the Cabinet in Paris. Family news (September 19); wishes for the success of Théroulde's trip to Brazil... "... Their Majesties, after their stay in Fontainebleau, are at the moment in Biarritz". [Late August 1870]. On the imminence of war, and the call for the Garde Mobile. 1871. He rejoices at the release of his son and Théroulde after their captivity (February 7); news of the French colony in England; worries about being in the news from Paris... Horror at the news of the devastation in Paris (June 3), and the death of Abbé Duguerry... 1873. Account of NAPOLÉON III's operation (January 4): "One fifth of the stone, which is the volume of a large chestnut and of a friable nature, has been crushed and removed"... Congratulations (August 21) on Théroulde's forthcoming marriage. Reaction of the Empress to this news (August 28). Damage at Arenenberg caused by a waterspout (June 20, 1876). Affair of the salute paid by a warship to the vessel carrying the remains of the Prince Imperial (July 1879). News of son "Polon's" trip to South Africa with the Empress (1880).
