Diego Giacometti's Chat maître d'hôtel is an emblematic sculpture whose genesis links the two artist brothers Alberto and Diego with one of the greatest patrons, collectors and dealers of his time, Aimé Maeght.
The fruit of a collaboration between the two brothers, this model was created in 1961, at Aimé Maeght's request, to adorn the inside of a cage designed to feed the birds at the Fondation Maeght in Saint-Paul-de-Vence.
Alberto Giacometti creates a drawing that his brother Diego transposes into sculpture. All Diego Giacometti's art comes together in this piece: aesthetics, humor and utility, combined in the figure of an anthropomorphic cat, an amusing predator of those he is here supposed to serve, who we don't know whether he is acting or submitting to the role he has been assigned.
