18K (750) gold 75 mm barrel pendant engraved Glorieux 75 and - Lot 287
18K (750) gold 75 mm barrel pendant engraved Glorieux 75 and 1914-15. Preserved in a shell-shaped case (accidents). Weight: 2.54 g. About the Glorieux 75: Inspired by earlier work (Baquet, Locard, Haussner) and developed mainly by Deport, Sainte-Claire-Deville and Rimailho at the Puteaux workshop, the Mle 1897 75 mm field gun-adopted in 1898 after orders as early as 1895-introduced innovations (hydropneumatic brake, long recoil, fast breech, boxed ammunition) offering revolutionary rate, accuracy and mobility. Its success led to overconfidence in this unique gun: although formidable as an infantry accompaniment, the 75 soon proved inadequate against entrenchments in 1914, necessitating costly tinkering, and saw numerous variants and widespread international use right up to the Second World War.
