Rare pair of marble basins resting on tapered legs with twis - Lot 294
Rare pair of marble basins resting on tapered legs with twisted flutes in opposite directions. Italian work of the 17th century Base in mahogany veneer and painted in canard-blue glue with gold fillets brought in under the Empire. These basins and their twisted shafts are of Italian origin, probably inspired by Etruscan or Roman models. The shafts were originally silver-plated, with a burnished agate silvering applied with water on a yellow Italian preparation. They were then painted with blue glue and gold fillet, and reassembled on their triangular mahogany veneered legs during the Empire. (Restoration of the paintwork in the 20th century).
