The Rights of Man and the First Fête de la Fédération, Franc - Lot 167
The Rights of Man and the First Fête de la Fédération, France, circa 1890
Rare broken-bone fan depicting the people of Paris gathered to celebrate the first Fête de la Fédération on the Champ-de-Mars on July 14, 1790, with the altar erected for the event in the background. On the sides, two scenes recall King Louis XVI's speech on September 30, 1791, accepting and swearing to the Constitution; the other, La Fayette's oath on July 14, 1790.
The reverse evokes national union, bringing together the tricolor flag, the king's white fleurdelisé flag, a Phrygian cap and the tables of the Rights of Man, with the Temple Tower in the background, where King Louis XVI and the royal family were imprisoned from 1792 to 1795.
The plumes feature fleurs de lys, Phrygian bonnets and a portrait of King Louis XVI.
Height 20.4 cm (very good condition)
