Jardin des Plantes, Paris, France, circa 1830 - Lot 163
Jardin des Plantes, Paris, France, circa 1830
Rare hand-held screen with mechanical unwinding based on Carmontelle's transparencies, called "écran-panorama" according to the Gaucheret brothers' patent registered in Paris in 1820.
Cardboard screen covered in white paper with stamped and gilded decoration. Two thumbwheels allow you to scroll through the views as if in a small theater, or a projection in the spirit of pre-cinema.
The back is covered with blue and pink stencilled paper, and hollowed out at the panorama point where a gauze allows light to pass through to illuminate the face.
The first view presents a summary of the seven views:
N°1 The menagerie of ferocious animals
N°2 The Lama
N°3 The elephant rotunda
N°4 The aviary
N°5 The temperate greenhouse (with the famous Zarafa giraffe presented to King Charles X in 1827, then the zebra enclosure)
N°6 The amphitheatre.
N°7 The labyrinth
Turned wooden handle.
Height 18 cm-Width 25.2 cm (worn, in working order)
