The grounds of the Château de Versailles, France, circa 1820 - Lot 160
The grounds of the Château de Versailles, France, circa 1820-1830 Rare hand-held screen with mechanical unwinding based on Carmontelle's transparencies, called a "panorama screen" according to the Gaucheret brothers' patent filed in Paris in 1820. The screen is made of cardboard, paper, engraving and gouache highlights. Two wheels allow views to be scrolled like in a small theater, or a projection in the spirit of pre-cinema. The back is covered with pink paper, edged with green, and hollowed out at the panorama point, where a gauze allows light to pass through to illuminate the face. The views are numbered, and preceded by a summary of this stroll through "The Park of Versailles": - 1 The Château and the Orangery - 2 The green carpet and the canal - 3 La pièce d'eau ditte (sic) du Dragon - 4 La Colonade (sic) - 5 Fontaine de Latone - 6Le Char Embourbé [Apollo's basin] - 7 Les Bains d'Apollon The last view features the word "fin" written in pen. Height 45 cm-Width 21.5 cm (small stains)
